1st Call For Votes
==================
SOC.CULTURE.SINGAPORE
=====================
This is the first call for votes for an unmoderated group for discussion
of topics related to the cultural affairs of Singapore.
The request for discussion (RFD) was published
about one month ago, and the discussion surrounding the group's
creation was generally positive. It's now time to put it to a vote.
NAME:
soc.culture.singapore
STATUS:
unmoderated
CHARTER:
Soc.culture.singapore will be a newsgroup where netters in general
and Singaporean netters in particular can discuss issues related to
the development of Singapore in the areas of science, technology,
culture and education.
VOTING PROCEDURE:
Send votes to: [email protected]
Preferably your message should include one of the following lines
in the body of the text:
I vote YES for soc.culture.singapore
I vote NO for soc.culture.singapore
We will be flexible in accepting other wording providing your vote
is made clear and unambiguous. If we receive more than one vote
from the same account;
o If the votes are for the same side of the issue, We will
count the votes as one vote. We will send email informing
the voter that their vote is only being counted once.
o If the votes are for opposite sides of the issue, We will
throw out both votes. I will send email informing the
voter that their vote is being discounted in this case.
The voting begins immediately and will end at 11:59:59 pm EST
on Thursday, Dec 31, 1992.
In order for your vote to be counted we must receive it before then.
COMMENTS:
1. My colleague, Siew-Cheong Mar, who first kicked off the dicussion
to form the proposed newsgroup, had asked me to help him to call
for votes. Another colleague, Roland Yeo, would assist me in
counting the votes and posting the summary of the voting results.
Anyone who has any suggestions or comments can email me
at the address: "[email protected]", but don't send your
votes to me. Send all your votes to the address: "[email protected]"
2. During the discussion period, it is quite clear that the name of
the proposed newsgroup should be "soc.culture.singapore" instead
of the original proposal "soc.culture.singaporean".
3. The guidelines for successful creation of a new newsgroup require
that the vote taker receive 100 more YES votes than NO votes, and that
the YES votes be at least 2/3 of all valid votes cast. At the end
of the voting period, the vote tally would be posted as soon as
it is ready.
Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year 1993 to everyone!

Hi everyone,
We're pleased to announce that the support for the formation of newgroup
"soc.culture.singapore" is overwhelming. The vote tally is 255 Yes votes
against 46 No votes. There are altogether 326 votes sent to the voting
account "[email protected]". There are 25 votes not counted as they are
ambiguous, repeated votes sent by the same person, void votes, or just
mail messages.
We would like to thank everyone who sent in their votes. And also we
appreciate very much the help of our colleague, Roland Yeo, who assisted
in setting up the account and in the counting of the votes.
Well, we hope "soc.culture.singapore" would be an interesting newsgroup
for the Singaporeans and everyone on the USENET. We hope to have
interesting discussions and contributions from everyone on the USENET
in the New Year 93.
Best Wishes and Happy New Year to every USENET readers!
