It contains suggested purpose, charter, one-line description, and rationale. This article is crossposted to news.announce.newgroups, news.groups, sci.psychology, soc.bi, soc.men, soc.motss, soc.women, and alt.transgendered. Discussion will continue for thirty days from the date of the posting of this RFD. If no consensus has by then been reached, discussion will be moved to email to resolve problems. Discussion will take place in news.groups. Group Name One-line Description ---------- -------------------- soc.support.transgendered Transgendered and intersexed persons Status ------ Unmoderated Rationale --------- Since its creation 30/10/1992, alt.transgendered has provided a forum for crossdressers, transsexuals, intersexed persons, and their mates, friends, and partners for discussion of issues surrounding these forms of behavior. A number of first posts took the form "I thought I was the only one! Thank god for this group!" Unfortunately, the propagation of alt.transgendered is poor, which means that it may miss those most in need of it, especially those deeply closeted and suffering the shame and guilt of a behavior that they don't understand and cannot seem to quit. The two transgendered mailing lists, Transgen and cd-forum, each have more than 300 subscribers despite relatively low profiles and screening of subscribers, suggesting that there is sufficient interest for an easily-accessible, mainstream usenet newsgroup. Therefore, it is suggested that a group for support of transgendered persons, and education on and discussion about transgendered behavior, be created in the soc.* hierarchy. The proposed name for this newsgroup (per discussions of the draft RFD and consultation with [email protected]) is soc.support.transgendered. The soc.support.* hierarchy, which may be expected to contain a number of other groups, will effectively come into being with this newsgroup. This hierarchy should also provide a home for other newsgroups in which mutual support is a major issue. Charter ------- Soc.support.transgendered is a forum for the discussion of issues surrounding transgendered behavior, for support and networking of crossdressers, transsexuals, intersexed persons, their mates, friends, and families, and the simply curious. It provides a place for discussions of discriminatory legislation, for discussions of the sources of gender identity, and for discussion of the impact of transgendered behavior on everyday life. It is also a place where those who are interested may come to learn what it means to be a crossdresser, transsexual, or intersexed person. It is intended to foster discussion on a wide variety of topics, ranging >from discussion of the perils and benefits of surgery and hormone therapy to makeup tips, and including health- and job-related issues, issues of parenting and of other relationships, and discussion of gender roles and expectations. It is the proper forum for support of transgendered persons, ranging from autobiographies to names and addresses of support groups, surgeons, and commercial outlets friendly to the transgendered community. It may be used for calls for help from those depressed by their inability to live up to the social expectations appropriate to the gender assigned them at birth. Soc.support.transgendered is NOT a newsgroup for the posting of fiction with transgendered themes, personal ads, or blanket condemnations of the transgendered. Posters are expected to know and abide by the rules of netiquette. Ultimately, the newsgroup's goals are dual: to provide support and advice to those in need, and to act as a source of information to those interested in learning more. Summary ------- It is requested that the newsgroup soc.support.transgendered be created. The proposed unmoderated group would act as a forum for discussion of, support for, and education about transgendered and intersexed persons. alt.transgendered has been in existence for more than a year and a half, with reasonable volume despite poor propagation. The similarly-themed mailing lists (which will not be gatewayed, in order to protect list-members' identities), each have over 300 subscribers. soc.support.transgendered, with better propagation, would potentially reach even more, especially those currently struggling with gender identity. --------------- Crossposted to: news.announce.newgroups, news.groups, sci.psychology, soc.bi, soc.men, soc.motss, soc.women, alt.transgendered. Mailing list: [email protected] Pointers to the RFD will also be posted in other appropriate newsgroups and at least one mailing list. Contact person -------------- Amy A.
