Please replace amazigh by berber when reading the following: We, hereby, propose to create a usenet newsgroup soc.culture.berber. The status of this newsgroup should be *unmoderated*. The proposed newsgroup will be a forum for discussion on issues related to the Amazigh language, history, and culture. Many of these issues are unique to amazigh culture and language, and hence are not being discussed in other special interest groups. Amazigh people (Imazighen) speak variations of a single language, Tamazight also known as Berber, which belongs to the afroasiatic family of languages. Among the Imazighen are the Chawi, the Kabyle, and the M'zab of Northern Algeria, the Riffian, the Schluh, and the Atlas Amazigh of Morrocco, and the Imucagh (Tuareg) of the Sahara. Smaller amazigh communities live as far as the Siwa oasis in Egypt in the East and the Canary Islands in the West. The Tuareg population itself is scattered in sub-saharian areas of at least three countries (Algeria, Mali, and Niger). Southwards, presence of the Amazigh (Izenagen) is detected as far as in Senegal. The purpose of this newsgroup will be the exchange of information between the people from these affiliations to promote their common language and culture. Furthermore, the involvement of people from different backgrounds will add to the quality of the newsgroup. The following is a list of possible topics but certainly not an exhaustive one of every matter in Amazigh life: o Amazigh History: The various theories on the origin of the Imazighen and their language. Important amazigh leaders. Roman, Arab and French influence in the region. Life and migration patterns of an amazigh during the various historical periods. Current status and the amazigh question in North Africa. o Literature: Literature in various dialects. Oral expression versus written. Amazigh stories and legends. Amazigh poetry, and translation of poems into other languages. o Music: Musical instruments used. Contemporary and Modern singers and music. Lyrics and the different interpretations. o Transcription and Software: Merits of existing transcriptions. Tifinagh encrypted in TeX. What_you_see_is_what_you_get software based on transliteration. Creation of ftp sites for free software distribution. o Teaching Tamazight: A language stays alive when it is TAUGHT! Challenges in teaching Tamazight and its transcription to native and non-native speakers. Use of different spoken dialects to enrich (or enpower) a common written amazigh language. Designing textbooks, and possibly dictionaries. Scientific vocabulary, and teaching science in Tamazight. Rules: Because soc.culture.berber will be unmoderated format, anyone will be able to post to this newsgroup. Please refrain from insults or unnecessary criticism of a person. Any criticism should be constructive, and polite. Please post your article in a mature and responsible way. Language: Tamazight is highly recommended as the communication tool of soc.culture.berber. Postings in other languages are welcome. Follow-up discussion: Any follow-up discussion will be carried out on news.groups. You may wish to cross-post on the Amazigh-Net mailing list: [email protected] Discussion Period: Request For Discussion will last for 30 days. This RFD will be posted again should there be any changes made. If there is a desire to create soc.culture.berber after the discussion period, a Call For Votes will be issued. You will be notified where to send your vote when the Call For Votes is issued. You are encouraged to participate in these discussions. Please voice your opinion.
