Regarding my ideas on moderation posted during that discussion, I certainly did not want to discourage anyone from continuing this process but only to make some suggestion that may or may not be workable. So, let me take the plunge and move this into appropriate channels. Anyway, let's get back to the big issue. Who is willing to moderate soc.history and what will be the procedure? For those reading this on news.groups who are not familiar with the situation, the S/N ratio of soc.history has become appallingly low and numerous complaints have been made. Nationalistic political arguments dominate the group; the biggest volume "discussions" are concerning the existence or lack thereof of the Jewish Holocaust in WWII, and arguments about who did what early in this century between Turks and Armenians (and sometimes Greeks). The issue for me is not so much that these discussions go on, but that they generate huge volume (literally making up the majority of the group) and are endlessly repetitive. So we have a problem. Solutions are welcome -- the most obvious seems to be some sort of moderation. Some decision on who should moderate should be made before this discussion can really continue. T. M.
