R E Q U E S T   F O R   D I S C U S S I O N
-------------------------------------------

This is a Request For Discussion (RFD) for the creation of a newsgroup for
the discussion of issues regarding the Symantec THINK Class Library for C
and Pascal.

GROUP NAME

comp.sys.mac.oop.tcl

STATUS

unmoderated

CHARTER

comp.sys.mac.oop.tcl (unmoderated) will be a newsgroup to discuss
Symantec's Think C and Think Pascal object-oriented framework and class
library for Macintosh. Discussion topics include

* class usage, design, and implementation

* TCL bug reports, work-arounds, and fixes

* TCL application development techniques

* TCL development aids

RATIONALE

The THINK Class Library has matured over the last two years into a full
suite of classes necessary to design and implement all aspects of a
Macintosh application. A TCL mailing list maintained at Brown University
has grown from a few dozen participants to almost 400 in a single year.
Further, this past year has seen an increasing number of TCL questions
appearing in the comp.sys.mac.programmer group and the successful of the
object-oriented-programming group within comp.sys.mac. The time is right
for a TCL specific group.

BACKGROUND

The THINK Class Library is distributed as part of Symantec's THINK C and
THINK Pascal Macintosh development environments. The class library includes
an application framework, a foundation set of interface classes, data
management classes, coordination classes, and an exception handling
mechanism. These classes and their documentation are supplemented by the
classes and information available in the archives on the internet
(ftp.brown.edu) and the major commercial networks such as America Online
and Compuserv, and in the SPLAsh newsletter.

SCHEDULE

This RFD was issued on March 1 and will last for 30 days. If this RFD is
approved, a CFV will be issued on March 31, and the voting period will end
at 11:59 (EST), April 20.
