                  REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION

         Group Name: comp.org.uniforum
             Status: unmoderated
       Distribution: world-wide
Summary: Newsgroup for announcements by and discussion
                      about UniForum Association
        Proposed by: George Bosworth (georgeb@netcom.com)
                      UniForum member # 5069

This is a formal Request For Discussion (RFD) on the subject of
creating an unmoderated Usenet newsgroup comp.org.uniforum.

BACKGROUND

UniForum, The International Association of Open Systems Professionals,
is a large Unix-related professional association located in Santa
Clara, CA. UniForum has over 39,000 paid and trial members, holds
an annual UniForum trade show, publishes a bimonthly UniNews and a
monthly UniForum Monthly, and publishes an annual Open Systems Product
Directory, which in '94 had over 1,600 pages. UniForum has 13
affiliate SIGs in U.S. cities, and affiliate relation with Unix or
Open Systems organizations in 19 countries.

CHARTER

The proposed unmoderated newsgroup comp.org.uniforum will be used for
announcements by UniForum staff, questions and answers about UniForum
affairs of any kind, and discussion of UniForum-related events and
matters. In operation, comp.org.uniforum will be similar to other
comp.org.* newsgroups, such as comp.org.ieee, comp.org.sug, and
comp.org.usenix.

Some sites carry a bogus newsgroup by the name of comp.org.uniforum
already. The official creation of comp.org.uniforum according to
agreed Usenet procedures will facilitate access to UniForum
information around the world.

This is NOT a call for votes. Barring a need for a second RFD, the
Call For Votes (CFV) will be posted approximately 21 to 30 days from
now. I intend to ask an independent third party to run the vote.

This RFD has been posted to news.announce.newgroups, news.groups,
comp.org.ieee, comp.org.sug, comp.org.usenix, and comp.unix.misc. Post
any discussion about this RFD to news.groups.

This RFD has been posted in accordance with the 'Requirements for
Group Creation' in 'Guidelines for Usenet Group Creation.' Its format
is based on those of several earlier RFDs.

                  REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION

         Group Name: comp.org.uniforum
             Status: unmoderated
       Distribution: world-wide
Summary: Newsgroup for announcements by and discussion
                      about UniForum Association
        Proposed by: George Bosworth (georgeb@netcom.com)
                      UniForum member # 5069

This is a formal Request For Discussion (RFD) on the subject of
creating an unmoderated Usenet newsgroup comp.org.uniforum.

BACKGROUND

UniForum, The International Association of Open Systems Professionals,
is a large Unix-related professional association located in Santa
Clara, CA. UniForum has over 39,000 paid and trial members, holds
an annual UniForum trade show, publishes a bimonthly UniNews and a
monthly UniForum Monthly, and publishes an annual Open Systems Product
Directory, which in '94 had over 1,600 pages. UniForum has 13
affiliate SIGs in U.S. cities, and affiliate relation with Unix or
Open Systems organizations in 19 countries.

CHARTER

The proposed unmoderated newsgroup comp.org.uniforum will be used for
announcements by UniForum staff, questions and answers about UniForum
affairs of any kind, and discussion of UniForum-related events and
matters. In operation, comp.org.uniforum will be similar to other
comp.org.* newsgroups, such as comp.org.ieee, comp.org.sug, and
comp.org.usenix.

Some sites carry a bogus newsgroup by the name of comp.org.uniforum
already. The official creation of comp.org.uniforum according to
agreed Usenet procedures will facilitate access to UniForum
information around the world.

This is NOT a call for votes. Barring a need for a second RFD, the
Call For Votes (CFV) will be posted approximately 21 to 30 days from
now. I intend to ask an independent third party to run the vote.

This RFD has been posted to news.announce.newgroups, news.groups,
comp.org.ieee, comp.org.sug, and comp.org.usenix. Post any discussion
about this RFD to news.groups.

This RFD has been posted in accordance with the 'Requirements for
Group Creation' in 'Guidelines for Usenet Group Creation.' Its format
is based on those of several earlier RFDs.

comp.org.uniforum so that readers of the bogus newsgroup are made
aware that it is bogus and that a vote is being conducted to make it

Your mail message should contain one of the following statements:
	vote comp.org.uniforum YES
	vote comp.org.uniforum NO

IMPORTANT VOTING PROCEDURE NOTES

You may also ABSTAIN in place of YES/NO - this will not affect the

If you give anyone a copy of the CFV, it must be whole and unmodified.

When in doubt, ask the votetaker.

The first CFV for this group said that it would be posted separately
to comp.org.uniforum so that readers of the bogus newsgroup are made
aware that it is bogus and that a vote is being conducted to make it
legitimate. However, I (i.e., the votetaker) did not do that
reposting because I discovered that I would have had to repost the CFV
to some other widely circulated group for it to propagate to sites
that carry comp.org.uniforum, and because further research indicated
that the number of sites carrying comp.org.uniforum is apparently very
low.
