REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION
Proponent : Christina Schulman (schulman+@pitt.edu)
Proposed new groups:
comp.sys.mac.games.announce Announcements for Mac gamers. (Moderated)
comp.sys.mac.games.action Action games for the Macintosh.
comp.sys.mac.games.marketplace Macintosh games for sale and trade.
comp.sys.mac.games.misc Macintosh games not covered in other groups.
comp.sys.mac.games.flight-sim Flight simulator gameplay on the Mac.
comp.sys.mac.games.strategic Strategy/planning games on the Macintosh.
Superseded group:
comp.sys.mac.games Replaced by comp.sys.mac.games.misc
This is a formal Request for Discussion for a split of the unmoderated
newsgroup comp.sys.mac.games into several new subgroups, one of which
will be moderated.
PROPOSAL:
The newsgroup comp.sys.mac.games shall be divided into a
series of subgroups based on the long-term topics that are currently
all in a single group. This split is based on the very successful
earlier split of comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.
The new subgroups shall be named based on the type of games
to be discussed therein. The proposed subgroups below
comp.sys.mac.games (csmg) are:
csmg.action
csmg.announce
csmg.flight-sim
csmg.marketplace
csmg.misc
csmg.strategic
RATIONALE:
c.s.m.g is a high-volume newsgroup (200 or more posts a day is
very common), which has resulted in many people being unable to keep up
with the group in a reasonable way even with the use of killfiles.
THE PROPOSALS
RENAMING: comp.sys.mac.games to comp.sys.mac.games.misc
This unmoderated group is for the discussion of all topics that
do not fall under another games subgroup. This group will take the place
of the current c.s.m.g and will carry all discussions that should not
be carried out in other games subgroups.
Should comp.sys.mac.games.misc pass, comp.sys.mac.games
shall be rmgrouped three months after the creation of c.s.m.g.misc.
The goal here is to preserve the hierarchical standards of the
net - If a group is created from group foo.bar, such as foo.bar.stuff,
then foo.bar should move to foo.bar.misc in order to keep everything
at the same level. If you vote for any other group in this vote you
should probably be voting for this as well (but it is not required).
NEW GROUP: comp.sys.mac.games.announce
This moderated group is for informative posts of general interest
to the Mac gaming community. Examples include announcements of new game
releases, new ftp sites, game reviews, and FAQ's. Followups will be
redirected to csmg.misc (should it pass) or another appropriate subgroup
at the moderator's discretion.
The moderator will be Mathew Mills, mills@csus.edu. The alternate
moderator in case of vacation or periods of heavy traffic (the Marathon
release, for example) will be Christina Schulman, schulman+@pitt.edu.
Several backup moderators are also available. The submission address
will be csmga@csus.edu.
NEW GROUP: comp.sys.mac.games.action
This unmoderated group is for the discussion of action games.
Action games are generally fast paced combat-style games which usually
require good hand-eye coordination. Examples include Marathon, Pathways
into Darkness, Wolf 3D, and the as-yet-nonexistent Mac version of DOOM.
NEW GROUP: comp.sys.mac.games.flight-sim
This unmoderated group is for the discussion of flight
simulation games. Flight simulations are games which simulate a real
or theoretically plausible air vehicle (using today's current
technology as its basis), and allow players to manipulate it as if
it were real. Examples include F/A-18 Hornet and Hellcats.
This group does not cover the same subject as
rec.aviation.simulators, although they are related. Again,
rec.aviation.simulators is concerned with realism and related issues,
while this group is more concerned with game play.
NEW GROUP: comp.sys.mac.games.marketplace
This unmoderated group is for the posting of for-sale, trade,
and wanted ads for Mac games.
NEW GROUP: comp.sys.mac.games.strategic
This unmoderated group is for the discussion of strategy games.
Strategy games usually involve complex manipulation of game resources
in many different ways, which directly affects the progress and outcome
of the game. Also included within this description are wargames, which
often involve similar strategic planning operations. Examples include
Civilization, TacOps, Spaceward Ho, and SimCity 2000.

2nd REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION
Changes to this proposal since the first RFD include the addition of
the unmoderated group comp.sys.mac.games.adventure for adventure and
RPG traffic, and the explicit inclusion of arcade games in
comp.sys.mac.games.action.
This is the second formal Request for Discussion for a split of the
unmoderated newsgroup comp.sys.mac.games into several new subgroups,
one of which will be moderated.

NEW GROUP: comp.sys.mac.games.action
This unmoderated group is for the discussion of action/arcade
games. Action and arcade games are generally fast paced games which have
a simple goal, and usually require good hand-eye coordination. Examples
include Marathon, Maelstrom, Apeiron, and the as-yet-nonexistent Mac
version of DOOM.
NEW GROUP: comp.sys.mac.games.adventure
This unmoderated group is for the discussion of adventure games.
Adventure games are generally games in which a character is presented
with puzzles, problems and obstacles which must be solved to attain the
game's goal. Generally, combat is not a major feature of the game, and
all players are confronted with the same puzzles in the path to the
solution. These games usually transport the character from place to
place in discrete steps, using stylized art to enhance the backdrop
and setting of the game, and present the player with unique puzzles that
have unique solutions. Examples include the Monkey Island games and
Myst. Role-playing games such as Realmz and Exile also belong in
this group.
NEW GROUP: comp.sys.mac.games.flight-sim
This unmoderated group is for the discussion of flight
simulation games. Flight simulations are games which simulate a real

8 invalid votes
For group passage, YES votes must be at least 2/3 of all valid (YES and NO)
votes. There also must be at least 100 more YES votes than NO votes.
There is a five day discussion period after these results are posted. If no
serious allegations of voting irregularities are raised, the moderator of
news.announce.newgroups will create the groups shortly thereafter. The
superseded group (comp.sys.mac.games) will be removed in three months.
Newsgroups lines:
comp.sys.mac.games.action Action games for the Macintosh.
comp.sys.mac.games.adventure Adventure games for the Macintosh.
comp.sys.mac.games.announce Announcements for Mac gamers. (Moderated)
comp.sys.mac.games.flight-sim Flight simulator gameplay on the Mac.
comp.sys.mac.games.marketplace Macintosh games for sale and trade.
comp.sys.mac.games.misc Macintosh games not covered in other groups.
comp.sys.mac.games.strategic Strategy/planning games on the Macintosh.
Voting closed at 23:59:59 UTC, 2 May 1995.
This vote was conducted by a neutral third party. For voting questions
only contact Steve Bonine <spb@ntrs.com>. For questions about the proposed
group contact Christina Schulman <schulman+@pitt.edu>.
CHARTERS
comp.sys.mac.games.action
This unmoderated group is for the discussion of action/arcade
games. Action and arcade games are generally fast paced games which have
a simple goal, and usually require good hand-eye coordination. Examples
include Marathon, Maelstrom, Apeiron, and the as-yet-nonexistent Mac
version of DOOM.
comp.sys.mac.games.adventure
This unmoderated group is for the discussion of adventure and
role-playing games. Adventure and role-playing games are generally
games in which a character or group of characters under the player's
control is presented with puzzles, problems, and obstacles which must be
overcome to attain the game's goal. Examples include the Monkey Island
games, Myst, Realmz and Exile.
comp.sys.mac.games.announce
This moderated group is for informative posts of general interest
to the Mac gaming community. Examples include announcements of new game
releases, new ftp sites, game reviews, and FAQ's. Followups will be
redirected to csmg.misc (should it pass) or another appropriate subgroup
at the moderator's discretion.
The moderator will be Matthew Mills, mills@csus.edu. The alternate
moderator in case of vacation or periods of heavy traffic (the Marathon
release, for example) will be Christina Schulman, schulman+@pitt.edu.
Several backup moderators are also available. The submission address
will be csmga@csus.edu.
comp.sys.mac.games.flight-sim
This unmoderated group is for the discussion of flight
simulation games. Flight simulations are games which simulate a real
or theoretically plausible air vehicle (using today's current
technology as its basis), and allow players to manipulate it as if
it were real. Examples include F/A-18 Hornet and Hellcats.
This group does not cover the same subject as
rec.aviation.simulators, although they are related. Again,
rec.aviation.simulators is concerned with realism and related issues,
while this group is more concerned with game play.
comp.sys.mac.games.marketplace
This unmoderated group is for the posting of for-sale, trade,
and wanted ads for Mac games.
comp.sys.mac.games.misc (replaces comp.sys.mac.games)
If you vote for any other group in this vote you
should probably be voting for this as well (but it is not required).
comp.sys.mac.games.strategic
This unmoderated group is for the discussion of strategy games.
Strategy games usually involve complex manipulation of game resources
in many different ways, which directly affects the progress and outcome
of the game. Also included within this description are wargames, which
often involve similar strategic planning operations. Examples include
Civilization, TacOps, Spaceward Ho, and SimCity 2000.
