Please send replies to: news.groups

This is a formal Request For Discussion (RFD) for the creation of an
unmoderated Usenet newsgroup misc.education.moo. This is
not a Call for Votes (CFV) ; you cannot vote at this time. Procedural
details are below.

Newsgroup line:
misc.education.moo	Discussions on the use of Moo for educational purposes.

RATIONALE: misc.education.moo

Text-language-based Multi-user Object Oriented Virtual Reality)
for Education, Information, Culture, Research and Support.
There is not yet a group dedicated to the specific discussion

made and ideas and problems can be discussed

misc.education.moo should provide a dedicated forum
for the discussion of the problems, ideas and prospects of using
Moo for education, information, culture, research and support.

misc.education.moo should also provide an ability to educate
the internet community, which often thinks of Moo in relation to
games and/or chat only, of the use of Moo for Education and Support.

CHARTER: misc.education.moo

Appropriate posting would include, but not be limited to:

1. Advice for parents and teachers regarding the use of Moo in schools
for and by children in formal Learning situations.

2. Problems with and ideas for use of Moo technology in education,
    information, culture, research and support.

3. Strategies for the use of Educational Moos for Cultural
and informational exchange and health-related information and
    support.

4. Announcement of new Educational Moos and updates on
    established Educational Moos.

5. Discussion of Remediation, and specialized education on
    Educational Moos

6. Discussion of the programming, maintenance and pedagogy of
    educational MOOs.

7. Discussion of theories and methods to study EduMoos

8. Discussion the ethics of moo studies

9. To spread information about EduMoo-related conferences, articles,
call for papers and special issues of journals, call for papers
    to conferences etc.

10. To point at and/or summarise discussions in related mailing lists

11. To discuss published articles (perhaps together with their authors).

12. To discuss saftey, censorship, privacy on EduMoos issues

13. To create a serious-mooing www homepage with:
        - a list/database with references/links to moo papers.
        - links to homepages of moo researchers and moo projects.
        - a FAQ.

END CHARTER.

should be raised and resolved. The discussion period will continue for
a minimum of 21 days (starting from when the first RFD for this
proposal is posted to news.announce.newgroups). All discussion should
be posted to news.groups.

At the end of the discussion period, a Call for Votes (CFV) will be
posted by a neutral vote taker.

This RFD attempts to fully comply with Usenet newsgroup creation
guidelines outlined in "How to Create a New Usenet Newsgroup" and
"Writing an RFD". Please refer to these documents if you have
questions about the process.

                     REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION (RFD)
           unmoderated group misc.education.virtualreality

Please send replies to: news.groups

This is a formal Request For Discussion (RFD) for the creation of
an unmoderated Usenet newsgroup misc.education.virtualreality. This is
not a Call for Votes (CFV) ; you cannot vote at this time.
Procedural details are below.

CHANGES from RFD:

After discussion in news.groups minor editing changes have been
made in all sections of this rationale and charter including a
change in the Newsgroup line which was: Discussions on the use of
Moo for educational purposes.

After more discussion it became obvious that the acronym MOO in the
name was confusing and did not clearly reflect the purpose of the
proposed usnet group misc.education.moo, therefore the NAME has been
changed as reflected below and the RATIONAL has been changed slightly
to better explain Moo or text based virtual reality,

CHANGES from previous RFD:

RFD:
misc.education.moo

2nd RFD:
Renamed:
misc.education.virtualreality

Newsgroup line:
misc.education.virtualreality	Moo text virtual reality for education.

RATIONALE: misc.education.virtualreality

Subjects related to the use of MOO text Virtual Reality (extremely
feature-rich Text-language-based Multi-user Object Oriented Virtual
Reality) for Education, Information, Culture, Research and Support.

MOO is text based virtual reality created using the moo programming
language. It has two features:
 1) it is interactive like IRC;
 2) it is extensible so anyone can create the
     kind of setting they want.

There is not yet a group dedicated to the specific discussion
of this fast growing and vital internet resource for the use of
education, information, culture, research and support.

Most interMoo discussion takes place via "pages" from one Moo to
another or on the various Moos themselves which is slow and
laborious. There is a need for a central and very public discussion
group where announcements can be made and ideas and problems
can be exchanged and discussed.

misc.education.virtualreality would provide a dedicated forum
strictly for exchange of information and ideas regarding Moo technology
for education, information, culture, research and support as opposed to
already available usenet groups dedicated to the discussion
of Moo technology for games and chat.

CHARTER: misc.education.virtualreality

Appropriate posting would include, but not be limited to:

1. Advice for parents and teachers regarding the use of Moo in
schools for and by children in formal Learning situations.

2. Problems with and ideas for use of Moo technology in education,
    information, culture, research and support.

3. Strategies for the use of Educational Moo technology for
Cultural and informational exchange and health-related information and
     support.

4. Announcement of new Educational Moos and updates on
     established Educational Moos.

5. Discussion of Remediation, and specialized education on
     Educational Moos

6. Discussion of the programming, maintenance and pedagogy of
     educational Moos.

7. Discussion of theories and methods to study Educational Moos

8. Discussion the ethics of moo studies

9. To spread information about Educational Moo-related
conferences, articles, call for papers and special issues
of journals, call for papers to conferences etc.

10. To point at and/or summarize discussions in related mailing
      lists

11. To discuss published articles (perhaps together with their
      authors).

12. To discuss safety, censorship, privacy on Educational Moos
      issues

13. To create a serious-Educational moo www homepage with:
        - a list/database with references/links to moo papers.
        - links to homepages of moo researchers and moo projects.
        - a FAQ.

END CHARTER.

PROCEDURE:

This is a request for discussion, not a call for votes. In this
phase of the process, any potential problems with the proposed newsgroup
should be raised and resolved. The discussion period will continue
for a minimum of 21 days (starting from when the first RFD for this
proposal is posted to news.announce.newgroups). All discussion
should be posted to news.groups.

At the end of the discussion period, a Call for Votes (CFV) will be
posted by a neutral vote taker.

This RFD attempts to fully comply with Usenet newsgroup creation
guidelines outlined in "How to Create a New Usenet Newsgroup" and
"Writing an RFD". Please refer to these documents if you have
questions about the process.

                     REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION (RFD)
           unmoderated group misc.education.virtualreality

This is a formal Request For Discussion (RFD) for the creation of an
unmoderated Usenet newsgroup misc.education.virtualreality. This is
not a Call for Votes (CFV) ; you cannot vote at this time. Procedural
details are below.

CHANGES from previous RFD:

After discussion it became obvious that the acronym MOO
in the name was confusing and did not clearly reflect the purpose of
the proposed group misc.education.moo, therefore this has been changed
from misc.education.moo to misc.education.virtualreality.

After discussion following the posting of the 2nd and 3rd RFDs,
minor editing changes have been made in all sections of this rationale
and charter, including a change in the Newsgroup line. The text has
also been revised to better explain text based virtual reality, and
references to Moo/Mud/Mush have been significantly reduced.

Newsgroup line:
misc.education.virtualreality	Virtual reality as a teaching tool.

RATIONALE: misc.education.virtualreality

Text based virtual reality uses Moo/Mud/Mush programming technology to
create interactive environments which can be used for educational
purposes in and outside the classroom. It has two main features:

1) It is interactive in that it requires active participation by
the student; and
2) It is extensible in that it enables programmers to create many
different kinds of settings.

Most discussion of this type of programming takes place via "pages"
from one Moo/Mud/Mush to another, on the various Moo/Mud/Mush games
themselves, or in newsgroups dedicated mainly to the discussion of the
Moo/Mud/Mush games and chat. There is not yet a group dedicated to
the discussion of this fast-growing and vital Internet resource for
education, information, culture, research and support. There is a need
to create such a group where parents and teachers can exchange ideas
on the use of VR technology as a teaching tool. This proposal is
designed to meet that need.

CHARTER: misc.education.virtualreality

Appropriate postings would include, but not be limited to:

1. Advice for parents and teachers regarding the use of virtual
reality in schools for and by children in formal learning
    situations.

2. Problems with and ideas for the use of virtual reality techniques
in education, information, culture, research and support.

3. Strategies for the use of educational virtual reality technology
for cultural and informational exchange and health-related
    information and support.

4. Announcement of new educational virtual reality programs and
    updates on established programs.

5. Discussion of the use of educational virtual reality programs
for academic remediation and in special education.

6. Discussion of the programming, maintenance and pedagogy of
    educational virtual reality.

7. Discussion of theories and methods for studying educational
    virtual reality applications.

8. Discussion of the ethics of virtual reality educational programs.

9. To spread information about conferences, articles, calls
for papers and special issues of journals dealing with virtual
reality technology in the education field.

10. To point at and/or summarize discussions in related mailing
    lists.

11. To discuss published articles related to the topic of the
newsgroup (perhaps together with their authors).

12. To discuss safety, censorship, and privacy issues as they relate
to the topic of educational virtual reality.

13. To create a web site dedicated to the topic, which will include:

        - a list/database with references/links to papers.
        - links to homepages of researchers and projects.
        - a FAQ.

Inappropriate postings would include, but not be limited to:

1) Commercial advertising
2) binaries
3) flames, spams and trolls

END CHARTER.

PROCEDURE:

This is a request for discussion, not a call for votes. In this
phase of the process, any potential problems with the proposed
newsgroup should be raised and resolved. The discussion period will
continue for a minimum of 21 days (starting from when the first RFD
for this proposal is posted to news.announce.newgroups). All
discussion should be posted to news.groups.

IMPORTANT VOTING INFORMATION:

Standard Guidelines for voting apply. One vote per person, one vote
per account. Votes must be mailed directly from the voter to the
votetaker. Anonymous, forwarded or proxy votes are not valid. Votes
mailed by WWW/HTML/CGI forms are considered anonymous votes.

Addresses and votes of all voters will be published in the final
voting results post. Duplicate votes will be resolved in favor of the
most recent valid vote.

The purpose of a Usenet vote is to determine the genuine interest of
persons who would read a proposed newsgroup. Soliciting votes from
disinterested parties defeats this purpose. Please do *not*
distribute this CFV; instead, direct people to the official CFV posted
to news.announce.newgroups. Distributing pre-marked, incomplete, or
otherwise edited copies of this CFV is generally considered to be vote
fraud.

When in doubt, ask the votetaker.

HOW TO VOTE:

Extract the ballot from the CFV by deleting everything before the
"BEGINNING OF BALLOT" and after the "END OF BALLOT" lines. Please do
*not* send the entire CFV back to me!

Don't worry about the spacing of the columns or any quote characters
(">") that your software inserts.

Provide your real name on the line that asks for it, and indicate your
vote in the brackets beside the group name. Valid votes are YES, NO,
ABSTAIN, and CANCEL.

Examples of how to properly indicate your vote (do not vote here):
  [ YES ] example.vote.yes
  [ NO ] example.vote.no
  [ ABSTAIN ] example.abstention
  [ CANCEL ] example.cancellation

Do *not* modify, alter or delete any other information in this ballot.
Vote counting is automated, and failure to follow these instructions
means the software may reject your ballot.

When you're finished, mail the ballot to <mcq@wco.com>. Just
"replying" to this message should work, but check the "To:" line. If
you ordinarily use a spam block, please delete it and use a valid
address to vote.

If you do not receive an acknowledgment of your vote within three
days, contact the votetaker about the problem. You are responsible
for reading your ack and making sure your vote is registered
correctly.

RATIONALE: misc.education.virtualreality

RATIONALE: misc.education.virtualreality

Text based virtual reality uses Moo/Mud/Mush programming technology
to create interactive environments which can be used for educational
purposes in and outside the classroom. It has two main features:

1) It is interactive in that it requires active participation by
the student; and
2) It is extensible in that it enables programmers to create many
different kinds of settings.

Most discussion of this type of programming takes place via "pages"
from one Moo/Mud/Mush to another, on the various Moo/Mud/Mush games
themselves, or in newsgroups dedicated mainly to the discussion
of the Moo/Mud/Mush games and chat. There is not yet a group
dedicated to the discussion of this fast-growing and vital Internet
resource for education, information, culture, research and support.
There is a need to create such a group where parents and teachers can
exchange ideas on the use of VR technology as a teaching tool. This
proposal is designed to meet that need.
