This is a request for discussion for a new Usenet newsgroup,
misc.test.moderated.

The objective of this newsgroup is to allow the testing of posting to a
moderated group, without the need to impose on the goodwill of existing
moderators.

The group is to be moderated.

Voting

A Call for Votes (CFV) will be issued later in the same newsgroups as
this posting. This is not the time to send in votes.

Rationale

The existing group misc.test allows news system administrators to test
propogation from their site, and a number of sites will auto-reply to
messages on this group. However, there is currently no way for a news
administrator to test the mechanism for posting to moderated groups
without actually doing so.

This is not a group for discussion of any sort. Newsgroups in the
news.admin and news.software hierarchies provide suitable places for
discussion of news software configuration and problems.

The moderation policy will be one or both of:

(A) Successful postings will be greeted by a reply, in email,
indicating that the posting was a success, or pointing out problems
in the headers as appropriate. No articles will actually appear on
the group from the moderator, except for bounces as detailed
below. Any postings that do, in fact, appear, will be replied to
indicating that there is a fault with their news software.
Postings whose reply addresses are ineffective will be advertised
    on the group.

(B) Successful postings will be approved and posted in the normal way,
but with the body of the message replaced by a text indicating
success, and the purpose of the group. Postings not approved by
the moderator will be cancelled, and the originators emailed.

I shall select one of these for the Call for Votes, depending on the
consensus of the discussion.

The news group will appear in David Lawrence's <tale@uunet.uu.net> list
of moderators, and will therefore be supported by the sites advertising
that they forward moderators' mail. This list already includes
pipex.net.

It is requested that the misc.test echo sites do not auto-reply to
postings in this group, should policy (B) be adopted.
It is hoped that the writers of news transport and reading software
will draw the attention of news administrators to this group.

I am prepared to act as moderator; if approved, I intend to delegate
the job to an automaton as soon as possible.

Ian
