I would like to open discussion for the formation of the
following newsgroup:
Name: rec.crafts.sourdough
Proposed Charter:
This group is intended for discussing the hobby or craft of
baking with sourdough.
We are not just a recipe group, Our charter is to discuss the
care, feeding, and breeding of yeasts and lactobacilli that make up
sourdough cultures. Also to discuss where and how to obtain breeding
stock, how to preserve by drying, refrigeration, and freezing. How
to swap cultures in the mail, and how to use these cultures to make
food. This necessasarily involves swapping recipes, but that is not
our major goal.
For the most part we believe that most of the members in this group
will be interested in the biology of what is going on, and would like
to know the names of the micro organisms that are making the whole
thing work.
Sample topics:
Swaping sourdough recipes.
Where do I get a culture?
How do I take care of and feed my culture?
Modifying recipes for sourdough.
Using your bread-machine with sourdough.
sourdough bread history.
Also included in the discussion would be some related
topics such as:
yogurt making
Biology of yeasts & lactobacilli etc.
Status:
Unmoderated. It is not suspected that this group would
have a controversial nature, and hence the services of a
moderator are deemed unnecessary.
Rationale and History:
This group is meant, at least in part, to be a permanent
home for the sourdough mailing list which has been in
operation since the beginning of the year. Since that
time we have had a very active and lively discussion.
We submit our experience as proof that this group can and will
sustain a traffic level appropriate for a USENET newsgroup.
Archives of our past discussions, along with several FAQ files
prepared for the group have been made available via anonymous ftp
from ftp.ils.nwu.edu under the directory pub/sourdough.
Many of those who subscribe to this mailing list have expressed
a desire to move to a USENET format, and this seems to be
the current consensus of the list. (Although it is not
assumed that they will ALL vote in favor of the creation
of this group when the discussion comes to a CFV.)
Mechanics:
The archives for this group will continue to be kept at
ftp.ils.nwu.edu in the pub/sourdough directory. A mail
link will be set up so that those who are unable to move
to the USENET will be able to continue in the discussion.
When we get to the CFV stage we hope to make use of automated
voting software that news.groups readers have offered.
