REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION (RFD)
===========================
This is a formal Request For Discussion for the creation of a new
newsgroup under the sci.physics.* hierarchy. This RFD is being
posted to sci.physics, sci.physics.research, sci.physics.accelerators,
and alt.sci.physics.new-theories. Follow-ups are set to news.groups.
PROPOSED NAME AND STATUS
========================
sci.physics.particle (unmoderated)
PROPOSED CHARTER
================
* Background
^^^^^^^^^^
Particle physics is a very active region of physics, theoretically
as well as experimentally. However, there is no general forum to
discuss this field. Sci.physics is a too general forum while sci.
physics.accelerators is mainly discussing particle accelerators and
the physics of beams. Some laboratories in the world do have their
own newsgroups but are not generally carried by many sites.
* Purpose
^^^^^^^
sci.physics.particle will be a newsgroup that provides a common
forum to discuss all aspects of particle physics, theories and
experiments.
* Topics of discussions
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Topics of discussions are, but not limited to:
- Pre Standard Model
- Standard Model
- Beyond Standard Model

There were 204 YES votes and 11 NO votes, for a total of 215 valid votes.
There were 2 abstains and 17 invalid ballots.
For group passage, YES votes must be at least 2/3 of all valid (YES and NO)
votes. There also must be at least 100 more YES votes than NO votes.
There is a five day discussion period after these results are posted. If no
serious allegations of voting irregularities are raised, the moderator of
news.announce.newgroups will create the group shortly thereafter.
