This is why there has been some discussion on how to split the group. Now the ideas on this are becoming clearer, i think it's time to make that discussion official. Note: all discussion should take place in news.groups . It is inevitable that some of it will leak into comp.sys.acorn, but don't make it too bad. What follows is a summary of the groups proposed, and some of the points concerning these new groups. comp.sys.acorn.advocacy comp.sys.acorn.irrelevant (half :-)) Flamewars and uninteresting discussions can be redirected here. This was the main reason why a split was proposed. comp.sys.acorn.announce moderated Announcements, press releases, FAQ lists, FTP lists. We need to find a moderator (Alan Glover has half volunteered, but maybe there are others?) comp.sys.acorn.tech comp.sys.acorn.hardware comp.sys.acorn.software Technical discussions. The main point here seems to be: do we want a single .tech group, or two groups, .hardware and .software? (Maybe we want all?) comp.sys.acorn comp.sys.acorn.misc General talk and discussion. Will we move c.s.a to c.s.a.misc, or do we just create the new groups and leave the name of c.s.a unchanged? Postings about all Acorn machines, from the humble System I up to the R260 and A5000 will be appropriate in all of the above groups, as well as postings concerning all aspects and uses of the ARM chips. I hope we can have a quick and good discussion on this, so we can start voting in the first half of June (the guidelines have no lower limit on the discussion time, but we should have things sorted out in 30 days, according to them). If the voting period lasts three weeks and the groups pass, they can be created before July. But knowing Usenet, it will be later... I won't be able to take the votes (exams and such...). THE RESULTS FROM THE USENET JURY: c.s.a.advocacy PASSED with 151 votes for, 50 against and 16 abstentions. c.s.a.announce PASSED with 189 votes for, 24 against and 4 abstentions. c.s.a.tech PASSED with 174 votes for, 32 against and 11 abstentions. c.s.a.misc FAILED with 138 votes for, 57 against and 22 abstentions. So, comp.sys.acorn.advocacy, comp.sys.acorn.announce and comp.sys.acorn.tech will all be created, and the renaming of comp.sys.acorn to comp.sys.acorn.misc will not take place. The newgroup control messages will be sent out by David Lawrence after the usual five day waiting period, during which corrections to the vote list can be made. Charters of the groups which have passed the voting procedure: 1) comp.sys.acorn.advocacy Description: Why my Acorn computer or program is better than yours. Or not. Charter: Here you can hold long debates why the ARM610 is better than the 586, why Translator's user interface is so very bad (or good!), or why Acorn should lower their prices. If you hold your wars here, the people who want to actually *do* things can get on with their work in the other Acorn groups. 2) comp.sys.acorn.announce moderated Alan Glover Description: Announcements of interest to Acorn and ARM users. (Moderated) Charter: This will be a low-noise group in which announcements about (products for) Acorn computers or the ARM can be made, as well as additions to public archives, FAQ lists, virus alerts etc. 3) comp.sys.acorn.tech Description: Programming aspects and hardware of Acorn and ARM products. Charter: This group is for discussion among people who develop hard- and software for or with Acorn computers or ARM chips. Non-technical discussions belong in comp.sys.acorn . 4) comp.sys.acorn - rename failed, stays the same Thanks go to the following people who voted: +---- Create comp.sys.acorn.advocacy |+--- Create comp.sys.acorn.announce ||+-- Create comp.sys.acorn.tech |||+- Rename comp.sys.acorn to comp.sys.acorn.misc vvvv YYYN 10-06-1992 03:03:39 2105995 <[email protected]> YYYY 10-06-1992 08:55:29 A.J.D.Hurley YYYY 30-06-1992 10:24:00 A.M.
