Frame Relay networks ( comp.dcom.frame-relay )
From [email protected] Fri May 28 16:16:50 1993 Path: uunet!bounce-back From: [email protected] (Edward Vielmetti) Newsgroups: news.announce.newgroups,news.groups,comp.dcom.cell-relay,alt.dcom.telecom,comp.protocols.ppp Subject: RFD: comp.dcom.frame-relay Followup-To: news.groups Date: 27 May 1993 17:21:20 -0400 Organization: Msen, Inc. -- Ann Arbor, Michigan Lines: 27 Sender: [email protected] Approved: [email protected] Message-ID: <[email protected]> NNTP-Posting-Host: rodan.uu.net Xref: uunet news.announce.newgroups:3622 news.groups:72903 comp.dcom.cell-relay:1558 alt.dcom.telecom:2101 comp.protocols.ppp:1709 This is a request for discussion of a new newsgroup, comp.dcom.frame-relay. Frame Relay is a protocol for sending datagrams ("frames") through a switched network. An encapsulation of TCP/IP in this framing is described in RFC 1294. The purpose of the group is to exchange information between users of public Frame Relay services, designers and manufacturers of customer equipment that speaks the protocol, and comparisons of this approach to other complementary technologies such as ATM, PPP over leased lines, and ISDN. The best mailing lists discussion I have seen have been on the IPLPDN (IP in Large Public Data Networks) list, but those have been rather narrowly focussed on implementation details. A broader list that included more of a system designer or user point of view should be useful. Discussion will take the month of June, and hopefully the vote will run in July with a group to be created 1 August. Please forward this as appropriate. thanks, -- Edward Vielmetti, vice president for research, Msen Inc. Frame Relay networks are defined by CCITT Recommendation Q.922 ("ISDN Data Link Layer Specification for Frame Mode Bearer Services"), ANSI T1.618-1991 ("ISDN - Core Aspects of Frame Protocol for Use with Frame Relay Bearer Service"), and Internet RFC 1490 ("Multiprotocol Interconnect over Frame Relay"). Frame Relay networks have been deployed by Internet service providers, inter-exchange telephone carriers, and local and regional telephone companies. The objective of the newsgroup is to provide implementors and users of frame relay with an open forum for the discussion of protocols, equipment, pricing, service, and other details of access to and building of frame relay networks. The group is to be unmoderated. Voting ------ The hope is to conduct a vote starting on or before 25 February, with votes to be collected by the Usenet Volunteer Vote-takers. This is not the time to send in votes. Current discussion and rationale -------------------------------- In the absence of an particular newsgroup for frame relay, this topic has been brought up in a variety of newsgroups peripheral to the focus of the proposed group. In particular, the newsgroups 'comp.dcom.isdn' and 'comp.dcom.cell-relay' appear to have the substantial concentration of interested and knowlegable parties. thanks -- Edward Vielmetti, vice president for research, Msen Inc. I was absent during much of the discussion period though due to a family illness, so if anyone is adamantly opposed to the creation of this newsgroup, please speak up now. Likewise, if there were suggestions for modification of the charter, please forward them again. Barring widespread opposition, I propose that we move to begin the voting period on 8/21/94 and let it run till 9/21/94. As mentioned earlier, I will defer to the good folks at Qualcomm to handle the vote. The CFV will be sent to the newsgroups listed below. HOW TO VOTE Send MAIL to: [email protected] Just Replying should work if you are not reading this on a mailing list. The subject in your mail message must contain the name of the group to allow your vote to be correctly handled by an automated vote-counter, if you do not do this you will receive a message asking you to resubmit your vote with the name of the group that you are voting for in the subject line. Please do not quote the entire CFV in your vote, it will confuse the automatic vote counter and will earn you a duplicate vote message. Your mail message should contain one of the following statements: I vote YES on comp.dcom.frame-relay I vote NO on comp.dcom.frame-relay You may also ABSTAIN in place of YES/NO - this will not affect the outcome. Anything else may be rejected by the automatic vote counting program. The votetaker will respond to your received ballots with a personal acknowledgement by mail - if you do not receive one within several days, try again. It's your responsibility to make sure your vote is registered correctly. Only one vote per person, no more than one vote per account. No votes will be accepted from system accounts (i.e. root, news, uucp) or anonymous accounts. Addresses and votes of all voters will be published in the final voting results list. -- Dave Cornejo There is nothing so subtle Dogwood Media as the obvious Fremont, California From [email protected] Wed Sep 14 14:15:05 1994 Path: uunet!bounce-back From: [email protected] (Dave Cornejo) Newsgroups: news.announce.newgroups,news.groups,comp.dcom.cell-relay,comp.dcom.isdn,comp.dcom.lans.ethernet,comp.dcom.lans.fddi,comp.dcom.lans.misc,comp.protocols.tcp-ip,bit.listserv.novell Subject: 2nd CFV: comp.dcom.frame-relay Supersedes: <[email protected]> Followup-To: poster Date: 14 Sep 1994 13:39:15 -0400 Organization: Usenet Volunteer Votetakers Lines: 97 Sender: [email protected] Approved: [email protected] Expires: 23 Sep 1994 00:00:00 GMT Message-ID: <[email protected]> References: <[email protected]> <[email protected]> Reply-To: [email protected] NNTP-Posting-Host: rodan.uu.net Xref: uunet news.announce.newgroups:5626 news.groups:115983 comp.dcom.cell-relay:5670 comp.dcom.isdn:7708 comp.dcom.lans.ethernet:12818 comp.dcom.lans.fddi:4633+ comp.dcom.lans.misc:4037 comp.protocols.tcp-ip:34835 bit.listserv.novell:83314 LAST CALL FOR VOTES (of 2) unmoderated group comp.dcom.frame-relay Newsgroups line: comp.dcom.frame-relay Technology and issues regarding Frame Relay Votes must be received by 23:59:59 UTC, 22 September 1994.
