This announcement is cross-posted to newsgroups whose readers may have interest in the discussion about the new group; follow-up discussion will take place in "news.groups". Suggestions, comments, and problems may also be emailed to me at <[email protected]>. REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION ---------------------- NEWSGROUP comp.sources.postscript (moderated) PURPOSE A sources group where PostScript programs of generally useful graphic images and utilities can be posted. RATIONALE Use of graphics is very popular in document-making, and a great deal of effort is spent in creating PostScript graphics. There is no general forum to share or request these graphics. A share space is also needed for utilities and example code for PostScript programmers. Comp.lang.postscript is a discussion newsgroup, and people rightly refrain from posting source code there because it would increase the non-discussion aspects of the group to the point that many PostScript non-programmers would not read it. CONTENT Source code written in the PostScript language would be appropriate. Except for fonts, programs in other languages would not be, even if they produce PostScript. Clip Art: Hand-made PostScript programs, converted binaries, or the machine generated output from a drawing tools, representing a graphical image meant to be included in documents. (Other art would usually be fine.) Utilities: Hand-made PostScript programs either demonstrating or facilitating use of the PostScript graphics language. "How-to" examples would be encouraged. Fonts: Fonts that can be used with the PostScript language. The focus should be on generally useful programs or art. Specific information, such as a new weathermap in PostScript posted daily, is more like a binary than a source, and would not be appropriate. Text documents formatted in PostScript would not be appropriate. EPS conversion, DSC conformance, and commented code would be facilitated and encouraged, but not required. NAME "comp.sources.postscript" follows other comp.sources.* groups. MODERATED Comp.sources.postscript should be moderated to limit noise, and to increase the ease of archiving and retrieving source code. Comp.sources.* groups are usually moderated. MODERATOR Jonathan Monsarrat ([email protected]) is an experienced PostScript programmer. He maintains the comp.lang.postscript FAQ. He is currently the only volunteer. NEWSGROUP CREATION The discussion period will begin when posted and end on December 24th. Please post all discussion to news.groups. If a consensus is reached by the end of the discussion period, a CFV (Call for Votes) will be posted at that time. The voting period would last for 30 days. I am looking for a volunteer to handle vote-taking (if a CFV occurs), because I am biased in favor of creation of the newsgroup. -Jon From [email protected] Wed Jan 13 17:44:29 1993 Path: uunet!bounce-back From: [email protected] (Terry Carroll) Newsgroups: news.announce.newgroups,news.groups,comp.lang.postscript,comp.graphics,comp.fonts Subject: CFV: comp.sources.postscript moderated Followup-To: poster Date: 9 Jan 1993 13:28:37 -0500 Organization: alphabetical Lines: 132 Sender: [email protected] Approved: [email protected] Message-ID: <[email protected]> NNTP-Posting-Host: rodan.uu.net Xref: uunet news.announce.newgroups:3103 news.groups:64122 comp.lang.postscript:16746 comp.graphics:34631 comp.fonts:7052 This is a Call For Votes regarding the establishment of a newsgroup to deal with graphic source written in the PostScript language. This announcement is cross-posted to newsgroups whose readers may have interest in voting on the new group. At the end of this posting is a mass acknowledgement of the votes received so far, as of Thursday, January 28 at 19:00 PST. If your internet address is listed below, your vote has already been counted; please do not vote a second time. CALL FOR VOTES -------------- NEWSGROUP comp.sources.postscript (moderated) PURPOSE A sources group where PostScript programs of generally useful graphic images and PostScript-related utilities can be posted. VOTING PERIOD FROM 00:01 GMT, Saturday, January 9th, 1993. TO 23:59 GMT, Saturday, February 6th, 1993. HOW TO VOTE To vote on comp.sources.postscript, send your vote to: [email protected] In the body or subject header (preferably the subject header), include one of the following: I vote YES on creation of comp.sources.postscript as proposed. I vote NO on creation of comp.sources.postscript as proposed. RESULTS OF DISCUSSION The RFD for this group was originated by Jonathan Monsarrat ([email protected]) and was posted to news.announce.newgroups on December 1, 1992. Discussion in news.groups and comp.lang.postscript has been positive. The charter has been changed to reflect the consensus that source not written in PostScript may be included if it is strongly connected with PostScript (see below). CONTENT Source code written in the PostScript language would be appropriate. Fonts and programs in other languages that involve PostScript directly and heavily would be appropriate also. This would include PostScript generating programs and other tools not written in PostScript. Examples: "How-to" examples would be encouraged. Fonts: Fonts that can be used with the PostScript language. The focus will be on generally useful programs or art. MODERATED Comp.sources.postscript will be moderated to limit noise, and to increase the ease of archiving and retrieving source code. Comp.sources.* groups are usually moderated. MODERATOR Jonathan Monsarrat ([email protected]) is an experienced PostScript programmer. He maintains the comp.lang.postscript FAQ. He is currently the only volunteer. VOTING RULES One vote per person. If you vote more than once, the votes will be counted as a single vote. If the votes are in conflict, all votes will be discarded. If you wish to change your vote, please send a message to me with a subject line of either of the following: Vote Change: I vote YES on creation of comp.sources.postscript as proposed. Vote Change: I vote NO on creation of comp.sources.postscript as proposed. Votes posted to any newsgroup will NOT be counted. According to the Usenet rules, in order for the new group to be created, at least 2/3 of the votes must be "YES", and there must be at least 100 more "YES" votes than "NO" votes. AMBIGUOUS VOTE RESOLUTION Ambiguous votes -- those whose subject lines or message body do not make clear the voter's intent -- will, where possible, be returned to their senders for clarification. Ambiguous votes which cannot be returned to their senders or for which no clarification is provided will be identified in vote mass acknowledgements and in the final vote tally. -------------------------------------------------------------------- MASS ACKNOWLEDGEMENT Below is a summary of the votes received thus far. [email protected] (Voted YES, but with a request that the group be unmoderated). [email protected] (Luiz Henrique de Figueiredo) (Sent message consisting of a single word, 'YES', without identifying whether the message was with regard to the newsgroup vote). Here is a recap of the comp.sources.postscript charter: NEWSGROUP comp.sources.postscript (moderated) PURPOSE A sources group where PostScript programs of generally useful graphic images and PostScript-related utilities can be posted. This would include PostScript generating programs and other tools not written in PostScript. Examples: "How-to" examples would be encouraged. Fonts: Fonts that can be used with the PostScript language. The focus will be on generally useful programs or art.
