This is a request for discussion for the proposed newsgroup
comp.ai.genetic. This unmoderated group will be devoted to the
subject of genetic algorithms.

This group has been discussed at length on the comp.ai groups. An RFD
was posted about a year ago, and met with widespread support, but for
some reason the proposer never followed through with a vote. There
was some discussion at the time about the name, but the general
consensus seemed to be that comp.ai.genetic was the most appropriate
name. (Alternatives included comp.theory.genetic, comp.ai.ga, and
comp.algorithms.genetic, but none of these seemed satisfactory.)

It should be noted that the presence of "AI" in the group name does
not rule out discussion of aspects of genetic algorithms that are not
directly related to AI, any more than it does in comp.ai.neural-nets.

The vote will be run by Michael Arras ([email protected]).
When the time comes, he will post the CFV for the creation of
comp.ai.genetic.

Topics for discussion in comp.ai.genetic include but are not limited to:

-- Mathematical theory of genetic algorithms.
-- Classifier systems, and other uses of GAs in machine learning.
-- The use of GAs in function-optimization.
-- Applications of GAs in any domain.
-- The use of GAs in the modeling of evolution.
-- Evolutionary aspects of artificial life.
-- Combinations of genetic algorithms and neural networks.
-- Other varieties of evolutionary computation
-- e.g. "evolutionary strategies" and "genetic programming".
 -- Software for genetic algorithms.
-- Implementational strategies for genetic algorithms.
 -- Conference and journal announcements.

Discussion is directed to news.groups.

The above was written by David Chalmers ([email protected]).

Request For Discussion: Creation of comp.ai.ga or comp.ai.genetic-algorithms.

NAME:
	comp.ai.ga or comp.ai.genetic-algorithms

STATUS:
	Un-moderrated.

CHARTER:
I (We) are proposing the formation of a newsgroup to discuss topics
concerning or related to genetic algorithms. Other topic areas might be
machine-based learning systems, such as classifiers, goal-seekers,
game-players, reward/punishment and parallel implementations since these
often employ genetic techniques.
Hybrid systems and combinations of other techniques (neural networks,
N(logN) systems) could be discussed, as well as domain-specific
(heuristic) techniques versus genetic techniques.
    Announcements about international/national/local conferences and/or
college courses might be posted. Proceedings, papers, books, articles
can be announced.

RATIONAL:
There is no appropriate place for the discussion of topics related
to genetic techniques in problem solving. Some discussion has occurred
in comp.ai and comp.ai.neural-nets, possibly others. There is a mailing
list [[email protected]] associated with this topic.
 - Send submissions to [email protected]
 - Send administrative requests to [email protected]

It is proposed that this list be posted to comp.ai.ga. I believe the formation
of this group will help increase awareness of genetic techniques, and spark
lively discussion among practitioners in the field (such as myself.)

OPTIONS/OPINONS:
The name should be either comp.ai.ga or comp.ai.genetic-algorithms.
The latter might be preferred for readability, but the diminutive "GA"
is already in wide use. Besides its easier to type.
Comp.ai.ga belongs in comp.ai. Adaptive systems (of which neural
networks are one type) are an appropriate topic of interest to AI researchers.
Machine learning is directly related to AI.
Comp.ai.ga should be unmoderated. We need to promote free and open
discussion of genetic techniques and allow for ample crossover of information
(local schemata?) from other fields of study. (This is the heart of genetic
techniques: No information is useless.) No other group in comp.ai is moderated.
(That I know of, anyway)

GA's are already over 30 years old. (Holland, J.H. (1959) A universal computer
capable of executing an arbitrary number of subprograms simultaneously.
1959 Proceedings of the Eastern Joint Computer Conference, 108-112.)
It is time they moved from the theory labs into the mainstream of
computer practice.
