Recent discussions in sci.geo.geology have noted that there is a
need for a newsgroup which concentrates on a developing field in
information managment known as GIS (Geographic Information Systems).
A preliminary poll for interest in such a group found that many were
eager to participate.
While there already exists a bitnet listserved newsgroup by the name
of gis-l, it is not readily available at all sites as a newsgroup. It
was agreed that if a new newsgroup for GIS discussions was created,
it would be bridged with the existing listserv group.
This call for discussion proposes that a newsgroup be created for
discussing GIS issues. This includes, but is not limited to:
o questions about specific GIS/LIS packages in the public and commercial
domains (e.g., MOSS, GRASS, ARC/INFO, ERDAS, ER MAPPER, etc...)
o questions on data issues (e.g., availability, sources, types...)
o discussions about GIS analysis and display methodologies (e.g., image
processing, cartography, classification, etc.)
o discussions about users use of GIS for attaining research goals
It is proposed that the new newsgroup be named: comp.infosystems.gis
The alternative is to put it under sci.geo.gis, but as many have
already pointed out, this might be construed as limited to discussions
of GIS usage towards earth science goals. This would be unfortunate
considering the wide application of GIS in many other fields. For
example, the increased use of GIS among government organizations and
public utilities for managing land and equipment resources.
All discussion, comments and suggestions welcome in news.groups.
This RFD was a joint effort of Dave Bonnett, Paul Friberg, and David Mark.
