Over the past week, I have received a large number of encouraging
messages on an informal suggestion to convert soc.culture.greek to a
moderated group, (or alternatively to create a new group,
soc.culture.greek.moderated).

The reasons why this proposal is so popular are probably well known to
most. Over the past two years, this group has been on the receiving end of
an intolerable amount of propaganda by what appears to be an automated
posting machine designed to drown the voices of those who want to engage
in reasonable discussion of issues regarding Greece and its people.

S.C.Greek is not the only group that has suffered by this attack. Very
recently, soc.history readers overwhelmingly voted in favor of
soc.history.moderated, for exactly the same reason.

I hope that moderation will help soc.culture.greek, one of the oldest
groups of Usenet, to continue to exist and to serve a useful purpose to
its intented audience.

This RFD starts the official process towards this goal. Within 30 days,
as is customary, I hope that will we will have a clear idea on what the
desires of the readership of soc.culture.greek is on these issues:

- To moderate or not to moderate.

- To create a new soc.culture.greek.moderated group, or to convert the
existing soc.culture.greek to a moderated group. It appears to me that
the latter is more desirable, but the former is easier to achieve for
  purely technical reasons.

- What the moderators policy should be. I feel that the moderator's role
in this instance should be to protect the group from the most systematic
attacks, like the one we have been witnessing from "anatolia.org". I
don't feel that soc.culture.greek could or should become completely void
  of confrontation.

- Who the moderator(s) will be. I feel that a group of moderators (at
least three) is needed; if anyone of the three thinks that a message
should be approved, then (s)he should have the authority to approve it,
regardless of the opinions of the other two. This should ensure that
the moderation process will be as liberal as possible.

Let me know what your opinion is. If there is positive feedback, a CFV
will be formed and put forth on or before June 4th, 1994.

Michael
