This is a Request For Discussion (RFD) concerning the creation of a new
newsgroup, comp.graphics.opengl. This newsgroup will be unmoderated.

With the licensing of OpenGL to the computer industry and the formal
release of the OpenGL 1.0 specification and sample implementation, it is
appropriate to establish a newsgroup devoted to the discussion and analysis
of this 3D application programming interface.

There is currently a good deal of discussion regarding the Graphics
Library, typically spread out among very general groups (comp.graphics),
vendor specific groups (comp.sys.sgi) and groups dedicated to discussing
other 3D technologies (comp.windows.x.pex). A single forum for the
discussion of the technical and business issues related to this emerging 3D
industry standard is needed.

Proposed Charter

comp.graphics.opengl will be a newsgroup for technical and business issues
surrounding the OpenGL API will be discussed. The following is non
exhaustive list of the possible topics:

1) OpenGL API - Technical questions related to the OpenGL API and the 1.0
specification. Discussion and analysis of the OpenGL Utility Library and
Conformance Test. Comparison of OpenGL with earlier versions of the GL.
Comments and suggestions for new features and modifications to OpenGL.

2) Vendor Product Plans - 20 PC and workstation companies have licensed
OpenGL. Discussion of the product strategies and plans of the licensees.

3) OpenGL Programming - Discussions concerning programming tips and
techniques for software developers using the OpenGL for the first time, or
experienced developers porting to OpenGL from prior versions of the GL.

4) OpenGL Window System Integration Issues - Technical explanations of the
integration of OpenGL into different window systems such as X Window and
Windows NT.

5) Technical and Market Comparison versus Alternative Graphics API's -
OpenGL versus PHIGS, PEXlib, GKS, Dore, Renderman, HOOPS.........

This newsgroup is designed to be multivendor in nature.

All replies should be directed to new.groups.

After the appropriate period of comment, I will proceed to a Call For Votes
(CFV).

I look forward to your comments and suggestions.

GROUP:	comp.graphics.opengl

STATUS: Unmoderated

CHARTER: This is the initial Call For Votes (CFV) on the proposed new
newsgroup comp.graphics.opengl.

comp.graphics.opengl will allow for discussion regarding technical
and marketing issues surrounding the OpenGL 3D application programming
interface and its emergence as a multiplatform graphics standard for
distributed three dimensional graphics.

Currently a great deal of net discussion takes place about OpenGL,
unfortunately spread out among either newsgroups which are too
general, vendor specific newsgroups, or newsgroups dedicated to
competing API's or graphics protocols.

A dedicated newsgroup will allow for:

1) Technical discussion of the OpenGL API, OpenGL Utility Library,
and GL/X Wire protocol: Comparison versus prior releases
of the GL. Input concerning desired enhancements or new features.

Programming issues and techniques. Analysis of implementations
in different environments (Windows NT, Macintosh OS, Unix..). Porting
to OpenGL.

2) Marketing and Business Issues Analysis: Product plans of OpenGL
licensees.

Comparison versus other 2D and 3D graphics API's. Performance benchmarks
and competitive analysis.

VOTING INSTRUCTIONS:

The voting period for this CFV is as follows:

    Start: Tuesday, September 1, 1992, 0000 GMT
    End: Tuesday, September 22, 1992, 0700 PST

In order to be counted, a vote must be **received** during the voting
period.

To vote, send electronic mail to:

If you wish to vote YES for comp.graphics.opengl
   - Send a message containing the words "Yes: comp.graphics.opengl"
to [email protected]

If you wish to vote NO for comp.graphics.opengl
   - Send a message containing the words "No: comp.graphics.opengl"
to [email protected]

DO NOT POST YOUR VOTE! POSTED VOTES WILL NOT BE COUNTED!!
Do not send your vote directly back to me! It will not be counted!
All further discussion regarding this should be posted to news.groups.

RESULTS:

Shortly after the completion of the voting period, the vote tally and the
E-mail addresses and names of the voters will be posted on
comp.graphics, comp.sys.sgi, comp.windows.x.pex, news.announce.newgroups,
and news.groups. The tally will include a detailed listing of how
each person voted so that the results can be verified. After
the voting results appear there will be a 5 day
waiting period during which readers will have a chance to correct any
errors in the voting lists or the voting procedure.
