REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION
I'd like to propose a new newsgroup. This newsgroup would be
called comp.sys.mac.powerbook.
Main Objectives of this Newsgoup:
-------------------------------------------------------
1.) Provide PowerBook users and other users interested
specific resource for PowerBook articles.
2.) More specifically provide topic of disscussion that
only be pertinant to PB users. For example: Travel or
power management.
3.) PB readers would be free of sifting through large amounts
articles looking for PB relevant information.
4.) Lastly, benefit PB users by exchanging advise, opinions, and
experiences.
--------------------------------------------------------
This newsgroup has not been created yet, but has been submitted to
usenet for discussion.
If you support the creation of this group, please submit articles to
news.groups.
In order for this group to be created, discussion participation is
vital. So, Please submit articles.
Thanks.

Greetings,
This is a second Request For Discussion (RFD) for a portable computing
newsgroup in the comp.sys.mac.* hierarchy. The first RFD went out under
the name comp.sys.mac.powerbook but discussion generated by that proposal
has led to agreement that the name comp.sys.mac.portables would better
serve the purposes of the group and the basic structure of comp.sys.mac.*.
Because of the change in the intended focus of the group the proposed
charter has been heavily re-written and will probably require a lot of
discussion.
This RFD is being posted to news.announce.newgroups, news.groups,
comp.sys.laptop and a number of groups in comp.sys.mac.*. Followups are
set to news.groups and all discussion should take place there.
The first RFD was posted on 21 Jan 93. By 20 Feb 93 this discussion will
need to be finished or go offline and continue via email.
Proposed charter for comp.sys.mac.portables:
comp.sys.mac.portables is intended for discussion of topics specific to
portable computers that use the Macintosh OS (ie: The Macintosh Portable,
The Outbound Notebook System, The Macintosh PowerBook, and The Macintosh
PowerBook Duo).
As portable computers become more common among Macintosh users there is a
growing amount of hardware, software and other accessories intended for
use with portable Macs. Many of these products are of no interest to
people who do all their computing on the desktop and some of the software
will only run on portable computers. Also, efficient use of a portable
computer often requires different habits from those used in a desktop
environment.
There are all sorts of issues that are of common interest to all Macintosh
users but because of the unique nature of portable computing it seems like
a good idea to divert this discussion to a separate newsgroup within the
comp.sys.mac.* hierarchy. It belongs there, rather than in a group like
comp.sys.laptop, because the range of products intended for Macintosh
portable computers is so large and unique.
Acceptable topics of discussion would include:
- Battery power conservation, and travel concerns (ie: legal use on a
plane).
- Software designed for use in a portable environment (can include
utilities, communications software, multipurpose applications).
- Accessories for portable computers (carry cases, cellular modems,
portable displays).
- Hardware and software conflicts caused by special features on portable
computers (ie: crashes caused by putting one to 'sleep').
- Remote networking from different locations.
- Combining a portable computer with an existing desktop environment
(networking, file management, software updates).
Examples of topics that belong somewhere else:
- Model specifications (comp.sys.mac.hardware).
- Problems with software intended for all Macintosh computers
(comp.sys.mac.apps).
- General discussion of modems and communications (comp.sys.mac.comm).
- Problems with System Software conflicts/limits (comp.sys.mac.system).
- How much you love your PowerBook (comp.sys.mac.advocacy).
I look forward to your posted comments in news.groups,
-Geoff Bronner

Greetings,
This is the second Call For Votes (CFV) for comp.sys.mac.portables. A mass
ACK of votes received so far is at the end of this posting. I have not
made a comprehensive effort to elliminate duplicates at this date so some
may be present in this ACK.

*** Voting Timetable ***
The first CFV appeared in news.announce.newgroups on 4 Mar 93 and the vote
