There is no discussion of fiber optics applications and systems in sci.optics, and only occasionally mentioned in communications newsgroups. There about 350 messages per weeks in sci.optics; about 10% to 15% of thes are relevant to fiber optics. The comments and questions on general optics are overwhelming the questions and comments on fiber optics, and a separate category is certainly called for. People involved in the fiber optics industry, would prefer not to have to scan several hundred messages that are non-relevant to their specific interest. Applications of fiber include transmission systems for CATV and long-haul telco, fiber amplification in undersea cables, intrinsic fiber optic sensors for various uses, including medical, etc., etc. There are no newsgroups that discuss any of these systems. Fiber technology includes discussions of the best type of fiber to use for WDMs used in fiber amplifiers; different types of fiber optic switches, techniques for cleaning and inspecting fiber optic connectors, etc. etc. There are thousands of people involved in fiber optics technology and systems. Fibers optics is a relatively new, but pervasive, technology, and the future expansion of the Internet is dependent upon fiber optics. If a separate newsgroup is created, it will be the focus of all discussions concerning fiber optics, and enhance the exchange of ideas and information CHARTER: sci.optics.fiber sci.optics.fiber will cover all aspects of fiber optic technology, sytems, and applications. The technology will include all types of optical fibers and fiber bundles; lasers, LEDs,& photodiodes used in fiber optics; fiber optic connectors, splitters, WDMs, isolators, attenuators, modulators; and all other components used in fiber optics. Systems will include fiber amplifiers, audio & video transmission equipment telco transmission, fiber optics test equipment, connector polishing equipment, CATV transmission and distribution, endoscopes, and fiber optic sensors. Applications will include medical, telecommunications, CATV, undersea, aircraft, factory, and fiber optic signs. END CHARTER. PROCEDURE: This RFD will be posted on news.announce.newsgroups, sci.optics, LAN newsgroups, and any other relevant applications newsgroups. After the discussion period of 30 days, there will be a voting period of 21-31 days on whether or not to accept sci.optics.fiber.
