From [email protected] Thu May 6 14:55:27 1993 Path: uunet!bounce-back From: [email protected] (Robert Ryne) Newsgroups: news.announce.newgroups,news.groups,sci.physics Subject: RFD: sci.physics.accel hierarchy, seven groups Followup-To: news.groups Date: 30 Apr 1993 18:42:14 -0400 Organization: Los Alamos National Laboratory Lines: 78 Sender: [email protected] Approved: [email protected] Message-ID: <[email protected]> NNTP-Posting-Host: rodan.uu.net Xref: uunet news.announce.newgroups:3532 news.groups:71233 sci.physics:51499 REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION: of Creation of UNMODERATED Usenet newsgroups for discussions and postings related to particle accelerators and the physics of beams. The following newsgroups are proposed: sci.physics.accel.codes computer codes in accelerator physics sci.physics.accel.expt experimental methods, instrumentation, measurement sci.physics.accel.theory accelerator theory sci.physics.accel.structures particle sources, accelerator structures,... sci.physics.accel.rf-sources power sources sci.physics.accel.misc announcements, news from accelerator labs,... sci.physics.accel.abstracts abstracts of preprints, papers and tech notes PURPOSE: The purpose of the newsgroup "sci.physics.accel.codes" will be for discussing issues related to computer codes used in the design and analysis of particle accelerators, beam transport systems, and components of these systems. Topics of discussion could include, but would not be limited to, problems encountered using specific codes, advantages and disadvantages of various codes, and methods for using specific codes to solve certain problems. The purpose of the newsgroup "sci.physics.accel.expt" will be for discussing issues related to experimental accelerator physics. Topics could include, but would not be limited to, experimental methods, instrumentation, diagnostics and measurement. The purpose of the newsgroup "sci.physics.accel.theory" will be for discussing topics in accelerator theory. The purpose of the newsgroup "sci.physics.accel.structures" will be for discussing topics such as particle sources, injectors, Radio Frequency Quadrupoles, conventional and unconventional accelerator structures, etc. The purpose of the newsgroup "sci.physics.accel.rf-sources" will be for discussing issues related to rf power sources for particle accelerators. The purpose of the newsgroup "sci.physics.accel.misc" will be for postings that do not fall into the categories of the other groups. This could include things such as news from accelerator laboratories and announcements concerning conferences and schools of interest to accelerator and beam physicists. The purpose of the newsgroup "sci.physics.accel.abstracts" will be for the posting of abstracts related to accelerator physics and beam physics that are produced at accelerator laboratories, universities and institutions around the world. This group would be for posting just abstracts, including the author's name, institution and address. (This way, readers would know how to get further information, including the complete papers.) The actual posting of papers could perhaps be accomplished at a later date using an anonymous ftp server. NOTE WELL: I have been told that this topic duplicates SPIRES, a database that many people (including me) are unfamiliar with. If that is the case, then it should be brought up during the discussion period, and the proposal to create this group will be removed if there is a consensus to remove it. RATIONALE: Particle accelerators, beam transport systems and magnetic optics systems are designed, built and utilized at numerous institutions around the world. Researchers starting work on a problem that is new to them could poll the newsgroups for past efforts related to that problem. By fostering scientific interchange and discussion between accelerator scientists, these newsgroups would help researchers get their work done more quickly, it could prevent them from making common mistakes, and it could help them find the best solutions to problems. PROPOSER: Robert Ryne Los Alamos National Laboratory [email protected] DISCUSSION: Please post all discussions to "news.groups" IMPORTANT DATES The discussion period will begin on May 3. It is anticipated that a call for votes will occur around June 3, 1993. The e-mail message states that, if you are currently unable to access Usenet, but expect to do so in the future, and if you would like to participate in the vote, then send a one line message to [email protected] that says "send me the CFV" Acknowledgment: This CFV is a modified version of the soc.culture.austria CFV. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Please read the following information carefully, before sending your votes! The instructions on how to vote are located after the charter in this article! Do not post your votes to Usenet! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Charter for sci.physics.accelerators NAME: sci.physics.accelerators MODERATION: unmoderated PURPOSE: The purpose of the newsgroup sci.physics.accelerators is for discussing issues related to particle accelerators and the physics of beams. Possible topics include, but are not limited to: computer codes and simulation in accelerator physics; experimental methods, instrumentation, diagnostics and measurement; accelerator theory; particle sources; accelerator structures; advanced accelerator concepts; rf power sources; free electron lasers; announcements and news from accelerator laboratories. RATIONALE: Particle accelerators, beam transport systems and magnetic optics systems are designed, built and utilized at numerous institutions around the world. Researchers starting work on a problem that is new to them can poll the newsgroup for past efforts related to that problem. By fostering scientific interchange and discussion between accelerator scientists, the newsgroup would help researchers get their work done more quickly, it could prevent them from making common mistakes, and it could help them find the best solutions to problems. CHANGE OF MODERATION: If, in the future, there is a desire to change the status of the newsgroup from unmoderated to moderated, this can be accomplished by following the Usenet rules for creation of a new newsgroup (RFD, CFV, vote) -----------------------------End of Charter------------------------------- FOLLOWUP DISCUSSION: The period for discussion has ended. You may continue the discussion while the votes are being taken, but this will not have any effect on the proposal of sci.physics.accelerators. Any followup discussion will be carried out on news.groups. VOTING PERIOD: Start: Monday, June 21, 1993, 00:01 GMT End: Tuesday, July 20, 1993, 23:59 GMT Votes received before or after the voting period will not be counted. Call For Votes will last for 30 days. This Call For Votes will be posted two more times in the next 30 days, with voter acknowledgement. HOW TO VOTE: Rules: - Votes must be cast by e-mail only. Votes that are posted to the USENET will not be counted. - You can NOT vote by proxy. Your friend can NOT vote for you. You must have a valid e-mail address. You can NOT send your vote using anonymous service. Only one vote per person, per e-mail address. The moderator of a mailing list can NOT collect votes for his/her members. A member must send his/her vote directly. - You may vote once. The determination will be made based on your unique e-mail address. If there are multiple votes from one address, only the votes with the latest legal timestamp which falls in the time period will be counted. - You are voting for this charter.
