INTRODUCTION ------------ Since the creation of sci.psychology, other groups related to psychology have been created, from "sci.cognitive" to "sci.med.psychobiology" to deal with specific theoretical models and other issues that would be more easily and better propegated, read, and responded to through groups specifically devoted to those issues. Over the past few months, it has become clear on sci.psychology that a new newsgroup is warranted to discuss the multitude of professional research and practical issues. Individuals in the field of psychology often are turned off of the sci.psychology newsgroup early on because of the "pop" feel to the newsgroup; the multitude of laypersons who post or crosspost only minimally-psychology-related material time and time again, abusing the newsgroup despite requests to cease (eg. - the all-too-often questions of what is Drug X's purpose or Y Disorder's symptoms or Z treatment and how does it affect that person's life). This has resulted in an extremely high signal-to-noise ratio that has made kill files useless to those individuals who are only interested in professional issues regarding research on theory, clinical applications, grant issues, and academia. After discussion on possible remedies to the problem, it was generally agreed-upon that a new, *moderated* newsgroup for these issues, in the already-existing sci.psychology hiearchy, would be the most appropriate and effective solution. This would allow a lower volume and a higher quality of articles, as well as stop the crossposting abuse that is commonplace on sci.psychology. This serves as the formal Request for Discussion (RFD) on the creation of sci.psychology.research. CHARTER ------- Name: sci.psychology.research Summary: Discussion of psychology professional & research topics. Status: Moderated This newsgroup will be for the professional discussion of those topics directly related to the issues of research, academia, theory, and the science of psychology. Psychology is broadly defined as the study of individual human behavior. Issues related to research supporting applied psychological techniques, discussion of research into current theoretical work, statistical models & problems, reviews of current journal articles, in-process studies, research methodology, and grant-searches & grant-writing are appropriate topics for the proposed group. Issues related to "pop" psychology, help or information on a specific psychological or physical problem or disorder, advertisements for any products, discussions on: specific psychological techniques, psychopharamalogical interventions, whether psychology is a "science" or not, and on any research or theoretical areas outside the purview of psychology would remain on other newsgroups and would not be appropriate for the proposed group. This will be a loosely moderated group, moderation mainly being used to screen out irrelevant, non-psychology articles, personal attacks and arguments, political debate, and other topics as warranted. SUMMARY ------- Sci.psychology is currently a place for discussion ranging from proponents of one set of therapetuic techniques to a discussion on Nancy Kerrigan's attacker to whether memories of sexual abuse are real or not. While this diversity is valued, it is not likely to be lost by the creation of one group devoted to professionals discussing research and related issues. Many professionals have stated they would continue contributing to both newsgroups if this group passed creation. More importantly, many psychology professionals have stopped reading sci.psychology because of its high signal-to-noise ratio, and therefore have no forum in which to exchange ideas and discussion on psychological material. This group is being proposed as moderated to lower the increased volume found on sci.psychology and to increase the quality of articles. It will also act to stop the abusive crosspostings that have plagued sci.psychology from the onset. ------------------------------------------------ Notes on this RFD ----------------- This is the 1st RFD and is being posted on January 31, 1994 to the following newsgroups: news.groups news.announce.newgroups sci.psychology sci.cognitive sci.med sci.med.psychobiology alt.psychology.personality It may be freely distributed to any other groups or mailing lists where it might be of relevance. MODERATION GUIDELINES (written by Al Black; new to the 2nd RFD) --------------------- The purpose of moderation on sci.psychology.research is create a collegial forum for the discussion about psychological research, theory, applications, and related issues. For purposes of moderation, psychology is used in a broad sense. It includes the discussion of topics that overlap with other academic disciplines along with nontraditional areas and approaches to psychological research. Similarly, "related issues" and "applications" are defined broadly. Moderation of sci.psychology.research is not the Usenet equivalent of editing a journal; it is meant to work as a filter. The moderation is conducted in a spirit of inclusiveness and collegiality. Authors are encouraged to keep the content of their articles directed toward theory, research, and applications. Authors are also encouraged to cite relevant references in the literature or provide some documentation for claims when possible. When disagreeing with another poster, authors are encouraged to concentrate on the others' ideas. Of course, articles should be checked for spelling and formatted with a line length of less than 80 columns. A moderation mail alias will be set up upon the passage of the proposed newsgroup. This alias - which will be publicized - will allow individuals to submit an article for posting and it will be automatically redirected to one of the moderators. Articles posted to the newsgroup would also be automatically redirected to this mailing alias, as is done on all moderated newsgroups. If accepted, the article will be posted to sci.psychology.research in a couple of days. If the article is not accepted, the moderator will notify you of the rejection and give a brief explanation of why it was not accepted. Articles can be resubmitted for further consideration. If an author would like a resubmission to be considered by the entire set of moderators, it should be noted in the mail to moderator. If the majority of the moderators approve of the article it will be posted in a couple of days. If an article is not approved for posting in sci.psychology.research, and the author decides to post it elsewhere, they are encouraged to included the statement "This post was rejected by the moderators of sci.psychology.research." The moderators will post statistics of approval rates to sci.psychology.research on a regular basis.
