How to Set Up NZBGet with NewsDemon

NZBGet is a lightweight Usenet download manager built for NAS devices, Raspberry Pis, and low-power hardware. This guide covers setup, optimization, and integration with NewsDemon.

Getting Started All Newsreaders SABnzbd NZBGet Automation

What Is NZBGet?

NZBGet is a free, open-source binary newsreader written in C++. It is designed to be lightweight and fast, making it a good fit for NAS devices, Raspberry Pis, and other low-power hardware where SABnzbd might be too resource-heavy. It handles NZB downloads, PAR2 verification and repair, and archive extraction through a web-based interface.

NZBGet runs on Windows, Mac, Linux, FreeBSD, and many NAS platforms (Synology, QNAP, etc.). Some NAS vendors ship it pre-installed. You can download NZBGet from nzbget.com.

Setting Up NZBGet with NewsDemon

Install NZBGet

Download from nzbget.com or install through your NAS package manager. On first launch, open a browser and go to http://localhost:6789 (or your NAS IP with port 6789). Default login is nzbget / nzbget. Change this immediately under Settings > Security.

Add NewsDemon Server

Go to Settings > News-Servers. In Server1, enter:
Host: news.newsdemon.com
Port: 563
Encryption: Yes
Username: Your NewsDemon username
Password: Your NewsDemon password
Connections: 30 (increase up to 50 as needed)
Retention: 5700 (approximate, leave at 0 for unlimited)

Test and Save

Click "Save all changes" then "Reload" when prompted. Go to the main page and add a test NZB. If it downloads successfully, your server is configured correctly. If it fails, check that Encryption is set to Yes and the port is 563.

Set Download Paths

Under Settings > Paths, set your MainDir (where NZBGet stores everything), DestDir (where completed downloads go), and InterDir (temporary directory for in-progress downloads). Use fast storage (SSD) for InterDir if possible.

Enable Post-Processing

Under Settings > Unpack, enable "Unpack" and set the paths to your unrar and 7-zip binaries. NZBGet will automatically extract RAR archives after PAR2 verification. Enable "DirectUnpack" if you want extraction to start while the download is still in progress.

NZBGet vs SABnzbd

Both tools do the same job. The main differences come down to resource usage and platform support.

NZBGet is better if: you are running on a NAS, Raspberry Pi, or other low-power device; you want the smallest possible memory footprint; you need DirectUnpack (extracting while downloading).

SABnzbd is better if: you prefer a more polished interface; you want wider community support and more tutorials available; you are running on a normal desktop or server with plenty of resources.

Both support the same API that automation tools like Sonarr, Radarr, and Prowlarr use. You can switch between them without changing your automation setup, just update the API endpoint.

Troubleshooting

Slow speeds

Increase connections (up to 50). Enable "ArticleCache" in Settings > Connection and set it to about half your available RAM. This lets NZBGet buffer articles in memory instead of writing every segment to disk. On a NAS, this can significantly improve throughput.

High CPU during unpacking

If your device struggles during PAR2 repair or RAR extraction, enable "DirectUnpack" to spread the work over the download period. You can also lower "ParThreads" to reduce CPU spikes during repair.

Cannot connect

Same troubleshooting as any newsreader: verify username/password, ensure Encryption is enabled on port 563, try port 443 if 563 is blocked. Check server status.
